Evangelical Angle Church St. Concordia

We look forward to your visit in St. Concordia!

The church was built in 1660/61 and has never been changed since then. It is one of five angle churches in Germany and is considered to be among the two ‘real’ angle churches, i.e. it was originally built as an angle church whereas the other churches only became angle churches after some reconstruction. Since Ruhla was largely spared from destruction during World War I and II St. Concordia was not affected either. Hence it is the only angle church that has been conserved unaltered and in its original state since its first construction.

The church consists of two wings that are situated at a right angle. Where the two wings meet there is the spire and the altar space from where both wings can be overlooked.

After extensive renovation in the 1990s both wings can be used today. The southern wing is used by the congregation as a room for services. The organ is also in this part of the church. In the western wing the damaged chairs were removed. Only the galleries remained. This way a large space was created that can be used for congregational celebrations as well as for cultural events.

St Concordia can be seen by visitors and tourists at any time. There are no firm opening times. Whoever wants to visit the church is asked to ring the doorbell at the minister's house across the street. It is also possible to ask for a tour.

In the church concerts and other cultural events happen all year round. We warmly invite you to come!

St. Trinitatis

Köhlergasse D-99842 Ruhla

The church was built from 1682 to 1686. In the late 1920s, the church became a communal property, which led to restricted use as a church. In 1996 the discovery of dry rot in St. Trinitatis marks the beginning of an extensive renovation, which continues to this day. To support the ongoing renovation, the association ‘Förderverein St. Triniatis e.V.’ was founded in 1997.

Today the cultural church is used for events like concerts, readings, lectures, film events or the ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (European Heritage Day) At each event donations are collected, which are used for the renovation of the church organ and the preservation of the church.

Evangelical Church Thal

Monastery Church Ruhlaer Straße D-99842 Ruhla/Thal

The Monastery Church is the remaining part of the former Hermits of Saint William monastery of Weißenborn, which was founded in 1253. Different constructions like road construction and tram construction to Ruhla also changed the appearance of the monastery. The main entrance has been moved and the cemetery was closed in 1880. Today you can visit two funerary monuments of former knights and three lancet windows of the late Gothic period. Nearby, located in the former outhouse tracts of the monastery, is the hotel and restaurant “Klosterschänke”. The Parish of Thal belongs to the evangelical Lutheran parish district of Seebach. Church services still takes place today.

Evangelical Church Kittelsthal

Church of Peace Hauptstraße D-99842 Ruhla/Kittelsthal

The name of the church in Kittelsthal originated from the residents desire for peace after seven long and devastating years of war (1756 - 1763). Their wish has been fulfilled and a church for their own was built in 1765/66 and was consecrated on the 9th of November 1766. In 2000 the interior was renovated. In 2014 the church received three new bells. The inscription reads: “Christ is our peace” on the great bell, “Lord, give us peace” on the middle prayer bell, and “Peace be with you” on the little bell of blessing. The Parish of Kittelsthal belongs to the evangelical Lutheran parish district of Seebach.
